Dr. Joe Crow is the last living Plains Indian war chief, Dr. Medicine Crow has authored numerous memorable works concerning Native American history and culture. (He's the last person alive to have received direct oral testimony from a participant in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, since his grandfather was a scout for General George Armstrong Custer. He was also the first member of his tribe to attend college, receiving his master's degree in anthropology in 1939.) His works often touch upon nature conservation, especially when he shares beautiful traditional stories that weave human history with animals. Characters such as Spotted Dog, Old Horse, Wolf Lays Down and his namesake Medicine Crow jump through the pages.
